Soraya Seedat è un'eminente professoressa di psichiatria e direttrice esecutiva del dipartimento di psichiatria dell'Università di Stellenbosch. È titolare della cattedra di ricerca sudafricana in Disturbo da stress post-traumatico finanziata dal Dipartimento di Scienza e Tecnologia e dalla National Research Foundation. È stata insignita di diversi premi tra cui la World Federation of the Society of Biological Psychiatry Fellowship, il Lundbeck Institute Fellowship Award in Psichiatria, un MRC mid-career award, borsa di ricerca dell'Università della California di San Diego, il premio Anxiety Disorders Association of America Career Development Award, il premio Humboldt Research Award in memoria di Neville Alexander, il premio del Cancelliere per la ricerca della Stellenbosch University e un premio MRC Gold Merit. Ha più di 20 anni di esperienza nella ricerca clinica, epidemiologica e neuroscientifica di base come psichiatra che lavora nel campo dello stress traumatico e dell'ansia e ha progetti di ricerca in collaborazione con colleghi in Europa, gli Stati Uniti e in diversi paesi africani. È stata anche coinvolta nella ricerca sui neuroausili per 18 anni. Dirige una serie di programmi di ricerca nel Dipartimento di Psichiatria e mentori master, dottorandi e studenti post-dottorali. Ha esperienza nell'etica della ricerca come membro precedente del comitato etico per la ricerca sulla salute della Facoltà di Medicina tra il 2005 e il 2012 e come presidente di tale comitato tra il 2009 e il 2011. Attualmente è membro del Comitato Etico di Ricerca del Senato dell'Università di Stellenbosch e membro del Consiglio di Amministrazione della International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies. È redattrice capo del Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health e redattrice associata delle riviste Plos One e Global Mental Health. Ha pubblicato più di 400 manoscritti di riviste scientifiche e ha co-curato quattro libri.

Soraya Seedat is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry and Executive Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Stellenbosch University.  She holds the South African Research Chair in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder funded by the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation.  She has been the recipient of several awards including the World Federation of the Society of Biological Psychiatry Fellowship, the Lundbeck Institute Fellowship Award in Psychiatry, an MRC mid-career award, research fellowship from the University of California San Diego, the Anxiety Disorders Association of America Career Development Award, the Humboldt Research Award in memory of Neville Alexander, the Chancellor’s Award for Research from Stellenbosch University and an MRC Gold Merit Award. She has more than 20 years of clinical, epidemiological and basic neuroscience research experience as a psychiatrist working in the field of traumatic stress and anxiety and has existing collaborative research projects with colleagues in Europe, the United States and in several African countries. She has also been involved in NeuroAIDS research for 18 years. She directs a number of research programs in the Department of Psychiatry and mentors masters, doctoral and postdoctoral students. She has experience in research ethics as a previous member of the Faculty of Medicine’s Health Research Ethics committee between 2005 and 2012 and as chair of that committee between 2009 and 2011. She is currently a member of Stellenbosch University’s Senate Research Ethics Committee and a Board Member of the International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies.  She serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Child and Adolescent Mental Health and as an Associate Editor of the journals PLoS One and Global Mental Health. She has published over 400 peer-reviewed journal manuscripts and has co-edited four books.
